A list of contenders: Gratitude. Knowing the difference between what is in your control and what is out of your control. Taking full responsibility for your life. Looking after your health. Taking nothing, no event or word, as personal. Reading. Being generous. Being kind. Creating something.
They’re all small acts or simple ideas that are capable of instigating change in your life. But none of the above is the smallest thing that creates the biggest change.
I’ll allow Paulo Coelho to describe what is:
“…making a decision was only the beginning of things. When someone makes a decision, he is really diving into a strong current that will carry him to places he had never dreamed of when he first made the decision.”
All from a decision.
When you’re fed up, tired, exhausted, frustrated, unwilling to continue down the path you’re walking, a decision is all that can save you. A decision to change, to not persist, to act differently, to think differently, to become better.
I’m not saying decisions are easy. It takes courage to walk away from bad relationships and toxic environments. It takes nerve and confidence to fore-go the easy and stable for the risky and rewarding. It takes honesty to look at yourself and your life and say, “enough.” It takes wisdom to know which course to take.
A decision is in no way small. But it’s the smallest thing that can have the biggest impact on your life.
So if you want to change your life, do as Paulo Coelho advises, dive into the current and see where it takes you. Stop dithering. Decide.
